Here are a set of images of the MAGIC design. The MAGIC design has an eleven level
ChipMap pyramid. At each distinct level, a screenshot is shown rendered with anti-aliased
texture data and with a X11 emulated algorithm. Each screenshot is 1600x1200, but shrunk
to fit on the page. To see the full size image, click on it. Level 7 is level used when
displaying the design at fullscreen.
As you go to lower levels in the pyramid by scrolling down the page (zooming in), you
can see how the aliasing effects become less noticable. At some point, the effects are
minimal enough that texture can be ignored and the X11 algorithm is sufficient. While it
may appears that levels 2 or 3 are similar enough, remember that performance is not
simply based on static image comparison. We have found that if you draw rectangles directly
too soon, the shimmering effects while zooming can be very disturbing.
In the upper right hand corner of each image is a status legend showing which level is currently
in effect. On the texture images, it shows the number of texture tiles being rendered. In the
X11 rectangle images, it shows the number of rectangles being drawn.
Lastly, no texture screenshots are shown for levels 1 and below since our heuristic
determined that they weren't needed for these resolutions.
